How to Bring the Boba Tea Shop Home Pt 4 (Hojicha: Matcha’s Cousin)
The first time Ernie and I tried hojicha was in Hong Kong at a shaved ice place called Shari Shari Kakigori. After trying the matcha shaved ice, we decided to try a different flavor; we saw hojicha shaved ice on the menu and we decided to give it a try.
I enjoyed the roasted and nutty notes from the hojicha. Actually Ernie and I thought the hojicha shaved iced tasted better than the matcha one. When I wanted to start making milk teas at home, I wanted to see if I could find a good quality hojicha powder, and that’s when I came across Hojicha Co.
Hojicha is roasted green that is low in caffeine; I like having it later in the day knowing it’s not going to keep me up all night. Unfortunately you have to pay for shipping and it is based on weight. The Hojicha Powder costed $23 for 100 g and I ended up paying $5.05 for shipping; to me it was worth it. They also had a handwritten note with each purchase, which is a nice touch. Also if you want to serve this at your own coffee/tea shop, they do offer discounts on bulk orders.

If you are a matcha lover and want to switch it up, I definitely recommend trying hojicha. You can also experiment with different flavors. The Hojicha Co offers lots of recipes with different flavor hojicha lattes, like mango and blueberry. I personally love adding homemade strawberry purée. If you want to try a regular iced hojicha latte, you can try my recipe below.
